This fabulous Victorian sterling silver locket and collar is Circa 1880.
The locket is large inset with 18ct two toned yellow gold leaf detail, engraved Ivy and Forget me knots.
Ivy is a symbol of “I cling to thee” and the forget me nots are Ever lasting memory.
Other stories tell of a courting couple walking by the water’s edge, where forget-me-nots
happened to be growing. Having picked a bunch of the flowers for his lady, her wooer
(who is sometimes personified as a medieval German knight in heavy armour) slipped and
slid into the water. Before being swept away to his death, he was able to throw the posy to
his love, crying ‘forget me not’.
Victorian jewellery has such a romantic meaning behind it all.
The lovely rope twist chain is substantial in width and all original to the locket.
